Athen
Ye Olde Demonic Killer
ABOUT ATHEN
Athen died some hundred or more years ago at the hands of a friend and due to a mix of betrayal, black magic and deceit involved he was involuntarily pulled back from death and forced to become a demon, tethered to the world by an object and forced to do the bidding of whoever held it. Which, for a while, was said former friend and now instead is the Group who use him as their little assassin when need be.
HISTORY
Who he was before it happened doesn't matter anymore, because everything's changed. He died, he saw the light and before he could touch it he was pulled away from it and brought back into the world of the living as something twisted and dark without consent. He wasn't special, he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and someone he thought he could trust took advantage of that.
When a soul is pulled back from the afterlife, or the realms between life and death, they become demons. Linked to an object known as their tether, those who hold that object control them. Many demons strive to control their own tethers, and those that do are the most powerful and malevolent of all; but even the strongest of demons can be brought to their knees by this leashing mechanic, though to destroy their tether would be to destroy their link to this world.
Athen's not like other demons, he doesn't give a shit about retaining or growing his power. He doesn't want to live forever, he doesn't even want to live another goddamn day. He wants his tether so he can destroy it and return to death before he forgets the feeling of peace he got a taste of those couple hundred years ago. (He's lost track.)
But until he can do that, he has to obey orders - so he kills who he's told to, and gets passed around by a society of old fucks who use him to further their own goals while continuing to make it difficult to track which one of them's holding his tether. It's very, very fucking annoying.
Athen's life before dying was a life under a different name, one that's started to fade from his memory. It comes and goes through dreams and shattered callbacks, things he pushes down and tries to ignore on the day by day. Because that's not who he is anymore, and nothing from that life has survived like he has into the present day. Not even the asshole that cursed him with this existence.
He'd fallen for the lies of a friend and died as a result, which would've been bittering enough had that friend not used his still warm corpse to turn him into a demon. Former friend. He held Athen's tether for a little while, while Athen stuttered through the sudden changes and the shock and awe of being pulled away from something warm, white and inviting. There was something on that side of death that he wanted more than anything else, and he can't remember what it was. Who it was.
But he remembers what it felt like to rip the heart out of that asshole's chest a few years later, after he'd fumbled and let Athen know that he'd sold his tether out of spite. Nikolai had been a stupid man for as long as Athen knew him, but he'd had himself played by the Group just like many others had. Something about betrayal made the creation of demons easier, more effective. A breaking of a bond, the yearning - the deceit.
The Group still holds Athen's tether over a hundred years later, passing him around like a tool when they need something handled. He's been able to avoid the Holy Fuckforce, aka the "angels" whose one job as it (purely) coincidentally lines up with church, is to hunt people like him down and banish or contain them. When or how demon hunters decided to wear crosses and get financial backing from the church for pretending to pray is beyond him, but in the effort of keeping up appearances he's still spitting at them any time he can. Even if in a way they want the same thing.
Death and release, not banishment and imprisonment. That shit would suck. Ain't interested in that.
